River & Wetlands

A river of history, vital to the future.

Where River and Wetlands Thrive

Woodhall Estate is set within the picturesque Beane Valley, with approximately three miles of the River Beane flowing through its landscape. As a rare chalk stream, the River Beane is one of only 200 in the world, making it an invaluable natural asset. At the heart of Woodhall Park lies The Broadwater, a striking lake originally created in the 19th century by widening the river. Today, the river and lake form a vital wildlife corridor, teeming with biodiversity and offering an exceptional natural habitat, remarkably close to London.

Over time, silt accumulation and water abstraction significantly impacted the health of the river and lake, reducing water flow and habitat quality. In March 2016, a severe storm caused flash flooding, leading to the collapse of one of the Broadwater’s banks. Within hours, the entire lake drained downstream, leaving behind 25,000 cubic metres of silt.

Recognising the opportunity to turn this challenge into a landmark restoration project, we partnered with Affinity Water to undertake a multi-phase transformation of the River Beane and Broadwater Lake.

Visiting the River Beane & Broadwater Lake

Members of the public can view Broadwater Lake and sections of the river from the public footpath running through Woodhall Park. However, due to safety considerations around water, access beyond designated areas is restricted without prior permission.

For businesses, conservation groups and educational institutions interested in seeing this ambitious restoration project, private tours are available. Please contact us for more details.

Woodhall Estate remains committed to restoring and protecting its waterways, ensuring that the River Beane and Broadwater Lake continue to thrive as a vital natural resource for generations to come.
