Caring for our Ancient Woodlands
At Woodhall Estate, our woodlands are among our most treasured assets — living landscapes that connect past, present, and future. Stretching across extensive areas of ancient deciduous and coniferous trees, these habitats are carefully nurtured by our dedicated forestry team, who work hand-in-hand with specialist consultants to ensure their long-term health and resilience.
Guided by a carefully designed 25-year woodland management programme, we balance conservation with thoughtful intervention. This includes selective felling and thinning, particularly in areas historically planted for commercial forestry, to create the light, space, and conditions that allow natural regeneration to flourish. Over time, these efforts restore balance, encourage diversity, and enable the land to return to a more natural state.
Our commitment goes beyond forestry practices alone. We see our woodlands as vital ecosystems that support a wide variety of wildlife, from insects and birds to larger mammals, as well as providing carbon storage, clean air, and recreational enjoyment for future generations. By combining heritage knowledge with modern expertise, we are working to ensure that our woodlands remain a thriving, sustainable sanctuary at the heart of the Estate.
“Woodhall Estate is an idyllic place to stay, so quiet and peaceful, with acres of beautiful grounds to walk in. We saw pheasants, lots of birds including an owl and red kites; hares, deer and even a badger at sundown!”
